TRENTON – A detective s investigation has led to his own arrest, authorities say.
Robert P. Harkins Jr. of the Cape May County Prosecutor s Office allegedly conducted an unauthorized probe into a minor accident involving a relative s vehicle, the Attorney General s Office said Thursday.
The probe began in December 2019 when a driver left the scene of a parking lot accident in Middle Township, the agency said in a statement.
It alleged Harkins documented his actions in an outdated manner to avoid review by his superiors, and issued an unauthorized subpoena to the store where the accident occurred.
Harkins, a 48-year-old Wildwood Crest resident, also allegedly used his position with the prosecutor s office to request information from state agencies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
