Winde vows to arrest warlords and thugs in the Ca

The Western Cape provincial government has proposed sweeping measures to rein in the taxi industry that has left hundreds of thousands of Cape Town commuters stranded, particularly people living in Khayelitsha. Community and Safety MEC Albert Fritz has branded the violence between rival taxi associations as “terrorism” at a digital press conference on Tuesday led by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde. Winde was also flanked by Western Cape Transport MEC Daylin Mitchell and Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile. Other modes of transport in the city, such as buses, amaphela and e-hailing services, have faced real and threatened violence from minibus operators, and were not operating in a number of Cape Town areas on Tuesday. Khayelitsha has not been served by either the city-run MyCiti bus service or Prasa’s train service for three years.

It has also starkly exposed the problems with South Africa’s public transport system which, outside of minibus taxis, is barely operational at the moment. Why are people in Cape Town unable to get to work?

KDF says the first step to resolving the violent taxi route dispute is for the warring associations to stop shooting at people . Fikile Mbalula indicated there was light at the end of the tunnel in terms of finding a resolution . Zizi Kodwa maintains the organisations need to find one another because poor commuters are suffering. The only people benefitting from a bloody taxi dispute gripping the Western Cape are the hitmen carrying out the violence, according to Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) chairperson Ndithini Tyhido. Tyhido said local forums from Nyanga, Gugulethu, Philippi and Langa have been urged to convene meetings with the warring Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association and Congress of Democratic Taxi Association for one thing and one thing only – silencing the guns for the sake of our lives .
