Chatham erosion prompts stairway removal, relocation of weather station

CHATHAM  Lots of creatures and vessels now use the April Fool’s Cut to travel between the Atlantic and Nantucket Sound through an ever-widening breach in the barrier beach torn open by a nor’easter back on April 1, 2017. But it’s most regular visitor, the tidal waters of the open Atlantic, has proven to be the most devastating, assaulting the properties along the inner shore behind the barrier beach on high tides and storms. The intrusion of the ocean into the once-calm backwaters that connect to Stage Harbor and Nantucket Sound raised tides by a foot or more, exposing that coastline to open ocean wave and tidal energy.

Thousands of mature oysters that stood in the way of aquaculture farmers growing oyster seed have been purchased by the Massachusetts Aquaculture Association, brought to a processing plant off-Island, and are now in freezers at Island Food Pantry ready for distribution to the growing number of people using the pantry’s services.

County Commissioners Continue With Budget Presentations

The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners continued with Fiscal Year 2022 budget presentations as five groups made presentations to the board last Wednesday, February 24. Those five groups were the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Cape Cod Municipal Training Academy and AmeriCorps Cape Cod as well as the county’s Dredge Program and Facilities Department. AmeriCorps Cape Cod partners with the 15 Cape towns to implement natural resource management projects while also focusing on disaster preparedness and response, environmental education and volunteer engagement. With an operating budget of roughly $680,000, AmeriCorps Cape Cod is now operating under the Cape Cod Center for Public Safety Training rather than as a standalone organization. The group’s Deputy Director Andrew Platt presented the budget, which stems from two primary factors: a federal grant and the county’s 1:1 match.

New Bedford food bank gets donation from aquaculture organization

NEW BEDFORD  The line for the St. Anthony of Padua Food Pantry stretched down Nye Street as patrons came out with bags full of vegetables, fruit, canned goods and  on this particular Thursday pints of frozen, shucked oysters from local growers. This year, the Massachusetts Aquaculture Association continued a program started by the Woods Hole Sea Grant program and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, which donated over 1,700 pints of oysters to the Greater Boston Food Bank last year. Through grant funding, the organizations were able to purchase oysters and donate them to local food banks, not only helping people in need of food, but also aiding oyster growers in need of revenue.
