COVID vaccine available: Cape Cod tries to reach younger people now

HYANNIS Paula Borowski, of Hyannis, was eager to get immunized against COVID-19, but she dreaded the idea of having to travel to a mass vaccination site off-Cape or spending hours online trying to book an appointment. As full-time head baker at the Cottage Street Bakery in Orleans who also works one day a week at Buckies in Dennisport, Borowski, 64, has precious little time to chase vaccines. It turned out that getting her first shot of Pfizer was a piece of cake. Close to noon on Tuesday, Borowski walked into a vaccination clinic at the Barnstable Adult Community Center in Hyannis and found herself one of the only patients among what seemed like a small sea of vaccinators.

COVID-19 variants and covid fatigue drove Cape Cod s third surge

Cape health officials say a perfect storm of variants and pandemic fatigue contributed to a third wave of COVID-19 cases that filled area hospital beds and closed the doors of the Cape s largest school system for over a week this spring. By mid-March, the towns of Barnstable and Yarmouth had the highest positivity rates in the state. At one point Barnstable s positivity rate was 10.20% , more than five times the state average. Areas of the Cape continue to remain in the state s highest-risk red zone. While case numbers are dropping, Cape officials fear next week s April school vacation week will create another surge as families travel and visit with friends and relatives.

Cape Cod Times State officials responding to a local outbreak of COVID-19 have detected 68 cases of variants of concern on Cape Cod, including 88% of the state’s P.1 cases. Genetic sequencing of positive COVID-19 cases in the past week in Barnstable County has resulted in the identification of 50 cases of the P.1 virus variant that originated in Brazil, according to the state Department of Public Health. That s all but seven of the 57 cases of P.1 that have been detected statewide, the DPH said. The state’s first case, announced March 16, was a Barnstable County woman in her 30s. Genetic sequencing of Barnstable County cases also has identified 18 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant first detected in the United Kingdom, according to the DPH.
