Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall convinced council to approve a pair of political hires in her office.(Cape Breton Regional Municipality/Zoom)
Cape Breton Regional Municipality s new mayor got her wish for a pair of political hires, but not without a lengthy debate at this week s online council meeting.
Former two-term mayor Cecil Clarke was often criticized for using his budget to hire a communications adviser and an executive assistant.
Mayor Amanda McDougall wants to do something similar, but plans to hire an Indigenous adviser and a community consultation co-ordinator.
Coun. Gordon MacDonald said he never liked the idea of the previous mayor having two political hires in his office and couldn t support the practice continuing.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality is looking to fill a new position that will create a psychological wellness plan for first responders.
The wellness co-ordinator will work with the municipality s operational health and safety team.
The new position came about after the federal government took a look at what the provinces were doing to support first responders.
The province has since started an online initiative, creating a website directed at first responders mental health.
Karen Butterworth, manager of occupational health and safety for CBRM, said the new role is the municipality s response to make sure it is taking care of first responders.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality s elected representatives have not met in the civic centre s council chamber since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March, and it s unclear when that will change.
They were scheduled to meet in person today, but the recently renovated chamber was unable to overcome public health restrictions.
Mayor Amanda McDougall said she was more than disappointed when Nova Scotia s chief public health officer and the Emergency Management Office rejected the municipality s plan to meet at city hall.

nd,” says Bob MacNamara. He and his son just hit the ice Saturday night in their makeshift backyard arena in Sydney, N.S.
