City made it 12 straight wins in all competitions with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola made it 500 wins as a manager.
Gabriel Jesus scored the winner inside 10 minutes, finishing from close range after fine work from Ferran Torres who went past Jayden Bogle and Ethan Ampadu inside the area before squaring for the Brazilian.
Bernardo Silva almost made it 2-0 when he capitalised on a poor attempted backpass, but he couldn’t get enough on his header to guide it past Aaron Ramsdale.
If the title race is compelling, with the lead switching between multiple teams, then the general rule is that the quality of football is probably mediocre. In recent years, when Manchester City and Liverpool have dominated, we have witnessed some of the finest football played in the Premier League but, 2018-19 aside, the contest was over by late winter.
So this season we will take what we can get. If the football on show and the quality of teams is considerably poorer, at least the contest is intriguing. City are top and recorded their 12th successive win in all competitions. But this is not the awe-inspiring team of years gone by.

Pep Guardiola felt Manchester City had earned their toughest victory of the season after beating battling bottom side Sheffield United 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Gabriel Jesus scored the only goal as the leaders ground out their eighth successive win in the Premier League and a club-record 12th in a row in all competitions.
City controlled the majority of possession but Chris Wilder’s team limited them to few chances and almost snatched a late equaliser through John Fleck.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) Gabriel Jesus scored his first Premier League goal since early November to lead Manchester City to a 1-0 win over last-place Sheffield United, keeping Pep Guardiola s team atop the standings on Saturday.
It was an eighth straight win in the league and 12th in a row in all competitions for City, which is showing the consistency its title rivals cannot match. In December and January, to show this consistency is amazing, City manager Pep Guardiola said. We will drop points, it s about how we overcome it.”
One failing of City s this season has been the lack of goals from its strikers, with Jesus and Sergio Aguero only managing two between them in the league ahead of Sheffield United s visit.

Manchester City strengthened their grip on top spot in the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday evening.
Aymeric Laporte, Kyle Walker, Fernandinho, Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus started from the win over West Bromwich Albion on the side of the Citizens.
It didn’t take the home side long to go ahead after Jesus pounced on a scramble in the six-yard area to finish from close-range following a pass from Torres.
Sheffield, who got the better of Manchester United in midweek, were nearly two goals down soon before the half-hour but Bernardo Silva was unable to make a defensive error count.
