EPL: Man City return to training after COVID-19 outbreak
Published 30 December 2020
Manchester City were due to return to training on Wednesday after no new positive cases of coronavirus were reported following the latest round of testing.
City re-tested their first-team squad and staff after Monday’s Premier League fixture at Everton was postponed due to previous positive tests for Covid-19.
City announced two players, Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker, as well as two members of staff had tested positive on Christmas Day.
Three further positive tests were reported on Monday ahead of the scheduled game at Goodison Park.
More tests will take place later in the week, the results of which will determine whether Sunday’s trip to Chelsea and next Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final at Manchester United can go ahead.

West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce called for a temporary halt to the Premier League season to act as a “circuit break” amid rising COVID-19 cases at top-flight clubs.
The Premier League said 18 individuals tested positive for the novel coronavirus between December 21 to 27, the most in a week this season, with Sheffield United reporting several new cases before Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat by Burnley.
Manchester City on Monday reported more cases, days after Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker tested positive, and their game at Everton was postponed.
Britain is battling a highly infectious variant of the novel coronavirus and Allardyce said it was time to act.

ZIMBABWE’S preparations for next month’s CHAN tournament were thrown into disarray yesterday after 14 members tested positive for Covid-19.
Nine players and five officials had by last night tested positive, forcing Zifa to cancel training.
The players and officials took Covid-19 tests upon their return from the Christmas holidays training hiatus on Monday.
“Yes it is true that five more positive cases have been confirmed. The new cases are non-playing staff”
Zifa communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela said last night.
The identities of the affected players were kept under wraps, but the individuals have since been notified and quarantined in line with World Health Organisation protocols.
Safety remains our No 1 priority, and the club will continue to proceed with great caution. The first team training buildings have undergone a deep clean over the past 48 hours, and the majority of these facilities will remain closed, with only essential operations around training resuming. The bubble will undergo further testing in the coming days, the results of which will inform and dictate the next steps. Everyone at Manchester City continues to wish speedy recoveries to all of our colleagues who remain in self isolation following their positive tests.
Following the cancellation of the club s match against Everton, City said in a statement that the club returned a number of positive cases, in addition to the four already reported on Christmas Day.
