Better Housing Coalition buys former motel property in Chester

The Colbrook Motel property in Chester is the latest target for the Better Housing Coalition.
The local housing nonprofit bought the now-razed motel’s site at 13916 and 13920 Jefferson Davis Highway for $1.2 million earlier this month, according to the county’s online property records.
Better Housing, which focuses on income-based housing, plans to build a 166-unit, income-based project called the Colbrook Community, with a mix of primarily garden-style apartments and 16 townhomes. Units would come in one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations, said John Bolton, the nonprofit’s vice president of real estate development.

The Virginia Department of Forestry and the Meadowview Biological Research Station recently acquired land that expands an existing conservation easement on the Joseph Pines Preserve in Sussex County.
The 196-acre purchase by MBRS increases the preserve property to nearly 428 acres.
The easement, donated to VDOF by MBRS, includes the entire preserve.
Almost 20% of homes in Petersburg are vacant.
That number alone puts the city among the top 10% of cities and neighborhoods in the country with similar vacancy rates. Unlike the other areas with comparable rates, Petersburg isn’t a seasonal or vacation spot. Rather than dealing with part-time residents, the city continues to battle its major blight epidemic.
“The blight that happened in Petersburg has been a result of years of neglect from property owners and the response from Property Maintenance was less than aggressive,” said Francis Poulin, director of Code Compliance Division’s Neighborhood Services
Petersburg suffered massive blight back for years now. The blight led to homes and buildings, like the old Ramada Inn off of 1-95, become more and more battered as time went on. The city wanted to address its blight epidemic and zeroed in on first fortifying the homes and buildings in its historic districts.
