Smithville elections: Alan Hemphill, Nancy Towry reelected to school board

Hemphill received 613 votes, or 50.3%, compared to Helmcamp s 606 votes, or 49.7%. Towry received 737 votes, or 58.35%, to defeat challenger Michele Rutherford, who received 526 votes, or 41.65%. The Place 3 and Place 4 seats were the only school board spots up for election.  Members of the seven-person Smithville school board, who serve without pay, are elected to three-year terms. According to the Bastrop County Elections Department, 1,294 total ballots were cast in the Smithville school board elections from 8,132 registered voters, a nearly 16% voter turnout for the May 1 election, the highest of any local government in Bastrop County. Place 3 election Towry gained momentum after the early vote was tallied  in which she received 396 votes compared to Rutherford s 300  and fended off the challenge to her reelection by more than 200 votes after the election day vote was counted, according to the unofficial results. 

Gordon reelected to City Council, Etheredge and Gerdes elected as new members

Incumbent City Council member Bill Gordon won reelection to his Place 3 seat Saturday, while Tom Etheredge and Stan Gerdes were elected to their first terms on the City Council, according to the unofficial results. The Smithville council election had contested races for the Place 2, Place 3 and Place 4 seats. Incumbent Sharon Foerster ran unopposed and sailed to reelection to the Place 1 seat. Incumbent Mayor Joanna Morgan won election to the city s highest elected office against challenger Jerry Callaghan. In the Place 2 race, Etheredge won election with 445 votes, or 62%, defeating Betty McBryar, who received 270 votes, or 38%. In the Place 3 election, Gordon, who has served on the council for six years, including as mayor pro tem, received 435 votes, or 59%, and fended off a challenge by Charles Diltz, who received 301 votes, or 41%.

Elgin elections: Ward 3 City Council race decided by two votes

Matthew Callahan unseated Ward 3 Elgin City Council incumbent Alvis Prince by just two votes in Saturday s municipal election, according to the unofficial election results.  Callahan eked out a narrow victory after receiving 60 votes, or 51%, compared to Prince’s 58 votes, or 49%. Prince was appointed to the City Council on Jan. 5 to fill a Ward 3 council vacancy until Saturday s election. Bastrop County Elections Administrator Kristin Miles said there is one provisional ballot that was cast in the Ward 3 race. The county’s election board is scheduled to review the provisional ballot at 9 a.m. Monday. Miles cautioned that if the ballot board approved the provisional ballot, it, by itself, would not overturn Saturday’s election result.

Gibson, Maldonado, Callahan elected to Elgin City Council Three seats were up for grabs in the Elgin City Council with Arthur Gibson III, Skyler Maldonado and Matthew Callahan winning those elections, according to the unofficial results Saturday night. In the race for one of the Ward 1 positions, Arthur Gibson III defeated Sarah Gudenkauf. Gibson received 66 votes compared to Gudenkauf s 47. Gibson, a third-generation resident of Ward 1, unsuccessfully ran for election to a Ward 1 seat in November against Elgin Mayor Pro Tem Jessica Bega.
