Earlier on Sunday, the 84-year-old Argentine Pope addressed thousands of visitors in St Peter s Square.
This is the first time the pontiff has been admitted to the hospital since his election in 2013.
In its statement, the Vatican said he was being treated for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.
Diverticular disease is a condition that involves bulges in the wall of the large intestine. This can lead to a narrowing, of the colon.

Rome – Pope Francis has undergone successful surgery to treat a colon problem at a hospital in Rome, the Vatican says.
The 84-year-old “responded well” to the treatment, which was performed under general anaesthesia, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said.
It is the first time Pope Francis has been admitted to hospital since his election in 2013.
Earlier on Sunday, the Argentine pontiff addressed thousands of visitors in St Peter’s Square.

The condition causes potentially painful inflammation of the diverticulum, a pocket that can form on the colon walls and which tend to multiply with age.
A potential complication is an abnormal narrowing of the colon.
Earlier Sunday, the pope gave the weekly Angelus prayer at St Peter s Square.
There, he announced that he would visit Slovakia in September after a brief stop in Hungary to celebrate a mass in Budapest.
