Antiques: When a rock is not just a rock

Antiques: When a rock is not just a rock Mike Rivkin Putting a rock on her finger, as the song goes, is supposed to be a harbinger of marital bliss. Sometimes it works exactly that way and, sadly, sometimes not so much. Perhaps it has something to do with the type, color and size of the rock. While I wouldn t bet on it, here are a few things you might want to know about the world s most expensive colored rocks if you re in the market for one. Let s start with diamonds. First of all, adjectives matter. Colored diamonds are typically graded as either fancy or vivid with colors parsed down to the nth degree. There are at least eight types of recognized blue diamonds, including faint blue, fancy blue, fancy vivid blue and more. And they re not cheap. An upcoming Christie’s auction later this month will feature a 2.13 carat fancy blue diamond with a supporting cast of lesser stones with a pre-sale estimate of $2-3 million. That s a lot of green.

Diamonds regain their sparkle as buyers return

© Christie s Japan’s sakura cherry-blossom season peaked this year in the city of Kyoto on 26 March, according to Osaka University. That makes it the earliest flowering in 1,200 years. The previous record of a day later had been set in 1409. But for auction houses in Asia rocked by last year’s pandemic, the lucrative spring-sales season can’t come soon enough. Christie’s in Hong Kong is trying to capture a little of the flower power in auctioning off the “Sakura Diamond” on 23 May. With its “perfect display of strong saturation and remarkable pink hue with a secondary colour of purple, [the Sakura Diamond resembles] the fascinating colour of cherry blossoms – appropriately coinciding with spring”, says the auction house.

Brand ambassador Poornima Indrajith did the launch. SWA Diamonds is a brand owned by Capestone, South India s one of the largest manufacturers of gold, diamond, and platinum ornaments based out of Malappuram in Kerala. It supplies gold, diamond and platinum ornaments to almost all leading jewellers in South India and is known for its exquisite craftsmanship. The launch of solitaire is aimed at making diamonds an investment opportunity like gold. The fear of loss of value when one sells the diamonds is the main concern that prevents customers from investing in high-value diamonds.
