Bedford County Public Schools sees first staff COVID-19 death, Lynchburg-area school divisions report 79 cases this week

A Bedford County Public Schools staff member died this week due to complications from COVID-19. At its Thursday night meeting, the Bedford County School Board held a moment of silence for Charles Ragland who died Jan. 13 according to his obituary. Jason Johnson, who was elected as chairman of the board at Thursday’s meeting, said Ragland suffered complications from COVID-19. This is the first COVID-19-related death reported by the division. Ryan Edwards, spokesperson for the division, said Ragland was an employee in the division’s transportation department. Johnson said he hoped for “peace and comfort to the family and all who knew and loved Mr. Ragland.”

Campbell County Public Schools exploring scheduling options for next school year

With growing concern about learning loss and in-person learning time, Campbell County Public Schools administrators are considering what secondary school scheduling options will allow students to make up for that lost time during the next school year. While planning for the current atypical school year — complete with a mix of in-person, hybrid and remote learning models — division officials chose to switch most secondary schools from the typical student schedule of seven yearlong classes to a schedule of four classes per semester. At Monday night’s Campbell County School Board meeting, division administrators shared with the board the challenges and successes it has seen this year with that schedule.

Lynchburg-area school divisions report 78 new COVID-19 cases this week; Va averaging 3,800-plus daily

School divisions in the Lynchburg area reported 79 new positive cases of COVID-19 this week, bringing the collective total of positive cases reported in Lynchburg City Schools along with Campbell, Bedford, Amherst and Nelson county school divisions to 337 since their school years began. Lynchburg City Schools reported 16 new positive cases this week, bringing the division’s total number of cases since September to 61. Bedford County Public Schools reported 24 new cases of COVID-19 this week, bringing its total of positive cases reported on its dashboard since September to 144. All new cases this week were traced to community, not school, transmission. New London Academy, Otter River Elementary School, Forest Elementary School and Susie G. Gibson Science & Technology Center each saw one new case this week. Forest Middle School, Stewartsville Elementary School and Staunton River Elementary School each reported two new cases this week.
