The Peruvian government has suspended its trial of a major Chinese coronavirus vaccine candidate after a participant suffered a serious medical episode, even as the country claims it will begin rolling out jabs in the next three months.
The Peruvian minister of health Pilar Mazzetti said that the decision of the National Institute of Health (INS) to temporarily stop Sinopharm’s trial in the country was to evaluate the reason behind the adverse incident, which saw a participant experience neurological symptoms.

Peru suspended trials for China s Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine due to a serious adverse event that occurred with one of the volunteers for the study, the Peruvian government said in a statement on Saturday.
The health ministry said the event is under investigation to determine if it is related to the vaccine or if there is another explanation.
Sinopharm Group Co Ltd, which is conducting its trials in Peru with some 12,000 volunteers, was about to complete the first stage of the trials in the next few days. Some 36,544 people have died so far in Peru from the coronavirus pandemic.

South Korea recorded 880 new coronavirus cases on Monday, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
Of the new cases, 32 were imported. The country also recorded 13 additional virus-related deaths.
The new figures raise the country s total to 44,364 confirmed cases and 600 fatalities.
South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said the government was now weighing up whether to introduce the highest level of coronavirus restrictions.
