A 19-year-old woman was killed and her 1-year-old passenger seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when she crossed into opposing traffic on Interstate 81 and slammed into a tractor-trailer, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Amiyah R. Sherard, of Harrisburg, was traveling north through Hazle Township, Luzerne County, when she crossed the median around 2 p.m. and struck a tractor-trailer on I-81 south, according to state police.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to veer off the highway, through a guardrail and down an embankment, state police said.
Sherard was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries. State police said her passenger a 1-year-old baby was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. The baby was later transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for more treatment.
