The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) on Saturday moved the Supreme Court for grant of interim bail to its secretary, Sidhique Kappan, who is charged under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and detained in a Uttar Pradesh jail.
In its plea, the journalists’ union said the health of Kappan’s 90-year-old mother in Kerala has deteriorated. She was in hospital in a very critical condition.

New Delhi, Jan 22 : The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday told the Supreme Court on Friday, it will examine the possibility of video conferencing between jailed scribe Siddique Kappan and his mother in Kerala. Kappan was arrested on his way to Hathras where a young woman had died after allegedly being gang-raped.
A bench headed by Chief Justice S. A. Bobde took into consideration the submissions by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), that Kappan s mother is very sick and before getting unconscious, she had expressed a desire to speak to her son. Please allow her to talk to her son through video conferencing. She can talk to her son while she is alive. We have filed an application. Please allow us, said Sibal.

Siddique Kappan, 41, was arrested on October 5 while on his way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh where a Dalit girl had been fatally brutalised. He was accused of being an extremist and charged under the anti-terror law UAPA for allegedly trying to foment trouble.
On Tuesday, about 20 people including his wife Raihanath, their three children and a few relatives and neighbours protested in the Kerala capital while honouring the Covid-related prohibition against large gatherings.

Delhi-based Kerala Journalist Siddique Kappan’s wife, Raihanath Siddique, has asked chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s to intervene for the release of her husband who was jailed at Mathura following his arrest by the Uttar Pradesh police.
On October 5, Siddique Kappan along with three others were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police while they were on their way to Hathras to cover the alleged rape and murder of a Dalit Girl. He was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act alleging intentions to stoke communal tensions by the police.

Family to stage dharna in Thiruvananthapuram in January Raihanath Siddique, wife of New Delhi-based Malayali journalist Siddique Kappan, has sought Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s intervention for her husband’s release. Mr. Kappan is in a Mathura jail at present after the Uttar Pradesh police booked him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on October 5 while he was on his way to report the rape and murder of a girl in Hathras.
She told the media here on Tuesday that the family would stage a dharna in Thiruvananthapuram in the first week of January, raising the demand. Ms. Siddique claimed that the U.P. government had tried to humiliate the Delhi unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), when it sought bail for him in the Supreme Court. Mr. Kappan is the secretary of the unit.
