Karnataka stalls Kerala s proposal to develop Thalassery- Wayanad-Mysuru rail line

Proposed rail connectivity between Thalassery and Kadakola   Citing an adverse report from its Forest Department, the Karnataka government has stalled the ambitious proposal of the Kerala government to develop the Thalassery- Wayanad-Mysuru rail line under Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (K-Rail), a joint venture company under the Kerala Government and Ministry of Railways. Reliable sources told The Hindu that the Karnataka government had pointed out that the ₹5,000 crore project involving the construction of a lengthy tunnel across Kabani river to save wildlife tracts of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole National Park was not feasible. Apart from the rich biodiversity rich corridor between Nagerhole and Bandipur National Parks being harmfully impacted , the sources said that the Karnataka Forest Department had also specified that even if the rail line is constructed through underground tunnels , it can affect the water recharge

KRDCL submits report on coaching terminal complex at Ponnurunni Kochi | Updated on RELATED Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has submitted a feasibility report to Southern Railway for the redevelopment of the marshalling yard at Ponnuruni to construct an international standard coaching terminal complex. The underutilised land in Ponnurunni, at the heart of the city, will have the capacity to host trains, apart from having space for repair and maintenance of trains. The new terminal would become a new halt station for trains through Kottayam and will also be a terminal point for new trains that are allotted to the State.

The project has been envisaged in approximately 110-acres of railway land in the Ponnurunni-Kathrikadavu area, by leasing out the land for a 99-year period. The report, which says that the project is technically and financially viable, was readied over three months. It was prepared in the light of inadequate capacity at the Ernakulam Junction railway station, causing trains to wait in the city suburbs for long to get the green signal.
