Moderna COVID vaccine authorized by FDA for emergency use in US

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Americans will soon have access to a second COVID-19 vaccine. Stephen Hahn, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, granted emergency authorization Friday  to a vaccine made by Moderna, a week after giving similar clearance to one made by Pfizer and its German collaborator, BioNTech. His is authorizing rather than approving the vaccine, because longer-term research is needed to meet the full standards for approval, which officials don t want to wait for during the public health emergency.  The speedy path to authorization was possible because the agency “cut through regulatory red tape,” Hahn said at a Friday night press conference. We worked quickly based on the urgency of this global pandemic . we have not cut corners.

Coroner rules nine-year-old girl died from excessive air pollution

Associated Press LONDON A British coroner ruled Wednesday that excessive air pollution from traffic fumes contributed to the death of a 9-year-old girl who died of a fatal asthma attack. The girl is believed to be the first person in the U.K. to have air pollution listed as the cause of death on their death certificate. Ella Kissi-Debrah, who lived close to one of London’s busiest thoroughfares, died in February 2013 after making almost 30 hospital visits over the previous three years. Her mother has long fought to have the role of air pollution in her daughter’s death recognized.

Tuscaloosa police officer gives Christmas bikes to MLK Elementary students

Seventeen children at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Tuscaloosa received  an early Christmas present Wednesday. The group of children from pre-kindergarten through second grade were ushered out the front doors of the school with their eyes covered. When they opened them, they saw a row of shiny new bicycles waiting for them. Tuscaloosa Police Officer Kyle Nation, a 27-year-old who has served with TPD for five years, was the driving  force behind the gift. He said that he is also a real estate investor on the side and decided the bicycle giveaway would be a great way to reinvest some of his profits into the community.
