KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A garage fire late Monday night on Sherwood Avenue in Kalamazoo remains under investigation.
Around 10:00 p.m. Monday, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers responded to the 1000 block of Sherwood Avenue discovered a detached, unoccupied garage to the rear of the property engulfed in flames. They were able to put the fire out within minutes of arriving.
The Kalamazoo Fire Marshall responded for further investigation as overhaul efforts were conducted. The cause of this fire is currently under investigation.

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Monday, the Kalamazoo City Board of Commissioners held a public discussion about its proposed 2021 budget.
During the virtual meeting, various leaders from the city discussed different facets of the proposal, including various projects and programs that are slated to start next year, as well as the reduction of gun violence and improvement of racial equity work.

KALAMAZOO, MI Former Public Safety Chief Karianne Thomas’ employment contract was terminated without cause earlier this year, the city of Kalamazoo has confirmed.
The city previously announced that Thomas, a 27-year employee of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, retired from the department, effective Oct. 1.
At the time of Thomas’ departure, the city manager’s office did not answer questions about Thomas’ departure, including whether she was forced to resign. Mayor David Anderson said previously it was Thomas’ decision to leave, and described the end of her employment with the city as “mutual” during a Dec. 15 interview.
