Battle Creek police on Tuesday, Dec. 22 said Henry Lewis Jones Jr., 18, was arrested by officers with the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team on Monday. Court records show he was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on charges of open murder and first-degree child abuse. Police said the 18-month-old child, Drequan Scott, was left in the care of Jones on Nov. 7 while the baby’s mother was at work. At some point during that day, Jones took the child to a relative’s home and asked them to call 911.

On Nov. 7, police, the Battle Creek Fire Department, and Marshall Ambulance responded to a medical emergency call for Scott. They tried to resuscitate the child, who was transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, where he died.

Firearms and drugs seized as a result of stepped up police surveillance

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Based on a significant increase in gun violence around the City of Kalamazoo primarily attributed to gang and group feuds, the Department of Public Safety along with Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team have begun surveillance operations in some neighborhoods. Their efforts Wednesday netted them three suspects wanted on outstanding warrants, as well as other drug and weapons violations. The arrests happened around 5:15 p.m. as police were conducting a surveillance operation in the 400 block of West Michigan Avenue. They saw three subjects known for their involvement in gun violence occupying a vehicle. Two of the men had outstanding felony warrants for their arrest.
