Nearly 300 schools closed in West Michigan after overnight snowfall

KENT COUNTY, MI – Nearly 300 schools have closed Tuesday, Feb. 16, after an overnight winter storm.
Among closings are public schools in Grand Rapids, Grandville, Byron Center, Caledonia, Forests Hills, Wyoming, Ionia, Kalamazoo, Portage, Holland, Hudsonville, Grand Haven and Zeeland.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College is closed while Kalamazoo College is delayed.
Four to six inches of snow fell in Kent County overnight. With temperatures in the single digits, and drifting and blowing snow, motorists should slow and use caution, Kent County Road Commission reported.
Plows have been out overnight but the Road Commission said a thin layer of ice is possible after roads have been scraped.

Officials say that this co-op is based on a similar program developed by Great Divide Brewing Co. The grant was used to purchase two balers – One provides a recycling outlet for bags made of woven polypropylene that are used for brewing grains, like barley, and other ingredients that come in large quantities.
âThese bags, which also include super sacks (bulk bags that can hold up to 3,000 lbs.) are recyclable,” Bellâs Sustainability Specialist Kate Martini said in a statement. “The problem was that up until now, none of us had access to a viable recycling outlet for it. In order to make this material viable for a recycler, we needed to have truck loads of the stuff, which most breweries do not generate on their own, even here at Bellâs. Oakland University and Kirtland Community College have forged a series of new articulation agreements that will help Kirtland students transition to OU in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Sciences, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Integrative Studies. The agreements help students save money by increasing the number of credits they may transfer to OU for each program.
Under the agreements, the number of accepted transfer credits increases as follows:
From 79 to 84 credits for Applied Health Sciences, leaving 40 credits to complete at OU
From 80 to 93 credits for Nursing, leaving 32 credits to complete at OU. Oakland will verify successful completion of the NCLEX-RN exam
