Public Library receives Big Read Grant; Galesburg to celebrate An American Sunrise

The Galesburg Public Library is one of 61 organizations nationwide selected to receive a 2021-2022 NEA Big Read grant. A grant of $11,800 will support a community reading program focusing on An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo in April 2022.

Galesburg Public Library eliminating fees

The Galesburg Public Library is doing away with late fees on items turned in past their due date. That announcement came Thursday along with the news that any existing overdue bills have been wiped from all Galesburg Public Library patron accounts. They add that the decision to go fine-free comes after several months of a trial run, with the library not having been charging late fees due to the pandemic. This gave library users some extra understanding during an already uncertain time and encouraging patrons to stay home while stay-at-home orders were in place. Library Director Noelle Thompson says that now is a great time to eliminate late fees and welcome back people to the library, quote, "Our community is beginning to open up, the Summer Reading Program is in full swing for all ages, and we look forward to seeing the faces that we've missed for the past year." Galesburg Public Library approved for Big Read again in 2022

The grant of almost $12,000 will support a community reading program that every year centers around a particular book. This year the book is "An American Sunrise" by Joy Harjo, who is the current United States Poet Laureate. The Big Read is an initiative of the NEA in partnership with Arts Midwest that aims to "broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book." This is year number 14 for the Big Read in Galesburg. Galesburg Public Library Director Noelle Thompson says they, "look forward to bringing the community together to soak up Joy Harjo's illuminating poetry." "An American Sunrise" is a book of poetry informed by the history of Harjo's tribe – the Muscogee (Creek) people – and her connection to the land.
