A new Midwifery-Led Clinic within maternity services at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise was launched last week where staff also encouraged people to consider midwifery as an occupation.
The clinic was officially launched on International Day of the Midwife, 5th May, by Angela Dunne, Director of Midwifery for the HSE National Women and Infants Health Programme. Susan O’Callaghan, Advanced Midwife Practitioner Candidate is leading on the new initiative.

The International Day of the Midwife was celebrated at University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL) yesterday, May 5. The day focused on how local midwives have risen to the extraordinary challenge of Covid-19 to provide safe care to the women and infants of the Mid-West.
The event with its 2021 theme of ‘Follow the Data; Invest in Midwives’ serves as a prominent reminder of the importance of midwifery, and the invaluable care that midwives provide.

THREE PREGNANT WOMEN with Covid-19 were being treated in the intensive care units of Irish hospitals last weekend, it has emerged.
Dr Peter McKenna, Clinical Director of the HSE’s Women and Infants Health Programme, revealed that the women were “very unwell” with the virus.
He reported the figure at last night’s media briefing by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
