Free Covid services begin in private hospitals - Newspaper

PESHAWAR: With coronavirus claiming 37 more lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, the private hospitals in Peshawar and Swat have begun providing admission, ventilator, medical oxygen, diagnosis and medicines to the people infected with the virus free of charge under the government’s Sehat Sahulat Programme (SSP). The public sector hospitals are already offering those services to Covid-19 patients. SSP deputy director (administration) Dr Aamir Rafiq told Dawn that free services were being offered to 78 coronavirus patients in private hospitals of Peshawar and Swat districts, which were hardest hit by the virus in the province. He said of those hospitals, four were in Peshawar and two in Swat.

For a single night in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) some hospitals are now charging Rs50,000 per night on a par with the well-known modern private hospitals despite the fact that government hospitals are ill-equipped and their services and facilities are not comparable with the private hospitals. Photo: File Owing to the rising number of coronavirus cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the consumption of oxygen in eight major hospitals of the province has increased by 83% over the last one-and-a-half week. The consumption of oxygen across all eight major hospitals has increased from 40,000 litres to 72,500 litres. The daily oxygen requirement at Peshawar s Lady Reading Hospital has increased by 66%, while the oxygen consumption at Khyber Teaching Hospital has increased from 6,000 litres to 7,500 litres. Oxygen consumption in Mardan Medical Complex has increased by 23% in the last 12 days. Similarly, the consumption of oxygen in Ayub Teaching Hospital in Abbottabad increased by 66%, while it increased by 89% in Bannu s Khalifa Gulnawaz Teaching Hospital.
