Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa is hosting a one-day-only Shred Day on Friday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the old McFarland Mall parking lot at 900 Skyland Blvd East. Rain or shine, community members can bring all of their old paper documents that need to be discarded in a safe and private way.
In partnership with The Better Business Bureau of Central and South Alabama and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, this free event is open to the public. Social distancing will be practiced for this event.
This is a great chance to finally get rid of old tax returns, bank records, and other documents that might be taking up too much room in your home. Each car that comes through is limited to two bags or containers.
The map below was shared to Twitter this morning, and it is BLOWING. MY. MIND.
Both aerial views of Tuscaloosa are shown at the same scale, and seeing these photos side by side really puts things into perspective.
I had no idea how large the actual mall is and needed a map like this to visualize its true size. It s one thing to walk from JCPenney to Belk, but it s another thing to realize that same walk would cover several blocks downtown.
And check out the expanse of the mall parking lot. I wonder how many cars the lot could actually hold and I also have one more thought.

McFarland Mall is the oldest indoor mall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and a portion of the building was demolished in February to make room for a proposed sportsplex.
Many of those who are from or went to school in the Druid City are curious as to what the mall actually looked like before demolition crews began tearing down the portion that once housed Woolco, Michael s, and Shoe Station (to name a few).
Local resident Jonathon Childs felt a special connection to the mall which inspired him to explore the property and take photos of the conditions inside. I felt like I was in a movie [.] when someone walks through an abandoned building and it brings back all the times they spent in that particular place, Childs said.
