Best Original Song has always been a curious little Oscar category. On balance, of all the elements that go into making a movie writing, acting, sets, costumes, effects the addition of a song seems to be, on paper, the least essential. And to specify that it be an
original song, written specifically for the film, thus denigrating the time-honored contributions of perfectly selected, preexisting needle drops … it’s all so peculiar. And yet, with the exception of the acting categories, no single corner of the Oscar ballot has historically been more essential for putting on the production of the Oscars telecast. It’s the only element of a movie that can be replicated in full onstage, and the writers and performers of those songs are the only non-actors who have a prayer of keeping that all-important TV audience glued to their screens.

The best original song race at the Oscars and Globes has seen songs from Judas and the Black Messiah, One Night in Miami, All In and other films with racial justice themes dominating the conversation.

State Sen. Mike Barrett, state Rep. Ken Gordon, Town Manager Sarah Stanton, and Bedford Cultural Council Chair Barbara Purchia, announced the award of 35 grants totaling $11,400 for cultural programs in Bedford or for Bedford residents.
“This is a wonderful and creative slate of Bedford Cultural Council grants. During the pandemic, arts and culture are more vital than ever in terms of the strength and fabric of the Bedford community and for our residents quality of life, ” Stanton said in a release.
According to Purchia, there were a record number of applications, many from first time applicants.
“These grants ensure that Bedford’s wealth of cultural groups will continue to thrive,” Barrett said. “From the looks of it, local volunteers buckled down and stretched every dollar to support an impressive 35 organizations.”
