Amber Wood of Winchendon wins Gold Award for her efforts to raise awareness of bullying in schools
Staff report
WINCHENDON To help counteract the nationwide problem of bullying among young people, Gold Award Girl Scout Amber Wood of Winchendon created a curriculum, website and Instagram page addressing the problem of bullies in school.
Wood, 19, participated in a Girl Scout troop in nearby Jaffrey, N.H. She created her PowerPoint presentation just as the COVID-19 pandemic began last year and had to readjust her plans to present her curriculum to middle school and high school-age students.
“I decided this was a good topic because I have personally been bullied and know many people who have,” said Wood. “Also, it’s a very serious topic worldwide.”

WEST ISLIP, New York (WABC) During February across Long Island, a sea of purple can be found at schools and businesses in honor of P.S. I Love You Day.
P.S. I Love You Day is held on the every second Friday of February, created by Brooke DiPalma in honor of her passed father, a retired NYPD officer, who took his own life when she was 14-years-old. When I lost my dad it was a shock, said DiPalma. It was a shock to my family, it was a shock to the community, and it was really a shock to me. He was my best friend, and to see what he did was simply not him. I was angry, I was frustrated, and I wanted to make a change.
Elementary students kick off annual kindness challenge in Riverhead
Kindness matters.
Fourth graders at both Phillips Avenue and Roanoke Avenue elementary schools are using their platform to spread that simple message as they celebrate the 2021 Great Kindness Challenge this week.
“It’s not only important to remind kids but adults how important kindness is,” said Adelaide Boese, a Roanoke Avenue Elementary student. “Because then you share the good with everyone, reminding them to be the best they can they be and to be kind to other people.”
To prepare for the challenge, students worked with Riverhead CAP social worker Shannon Kutner to create “Kindness Matters” signs for each school and kindness ‘kits’ for every classroom. Virtual students were also able to participate by creating signs for their homes.
