Show Transcript SHE IS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN OPHTHALMOLOGIST IN SACRAMENTO, OF THE AREA’S OCULAR PLASTIC SURGEON. HE SPENT TIME IN THE MILITARY TRAVELING THE WORLD FOR A CHANCE MEETING DREW HIM TO CALIFORNIA 32 YEARS AGO. I IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE WITH SACRAMENTO. ONE OF THREE CHILDREN, HE GREW UP IN THE SEGREGATED SOUTH. HE GRADUATED FROM HAMPTON UNIVERSITY AND ATTENDED MEDICAL SCHOOL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, MAKING HISTORY THERE AS WELL. BY THE SECOND YEAR I WAS THE ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN IN MY CLASS. THE PATH TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER WAS NO EASY FEAT. HE STILL RECALLS AN EXPERIENCE AT A VIRGINIA HOSPITAL IN 1976. I COULD HEAR PEOPLE WHISPERING THERE GOES THE BLACK DOCTOR. LIKE THEY HAD NEVER SEEN ONE BEFORE. THOSE EXPERIENCES PREPARED

The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage celebrated 10 years in the Russell neighborhood in 2019. The mission of the center goes back to the late 1800s and the plans for the future include sharing the rich history of Black Louisville and Kentuckians. Click here for the story.

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. In honor of Black History month, we introduce you to a newly-elected councilmember in National City. Marcus Bush has accomplished being the first to do many things for that community, including being the first Afro-Latino to serve.
Bush says now that he’s been elected to City council and is breaking down barriers, he wants to focus on issues that affect all underserved groups and hopefully inspire someone else in the process.
