Last spring, as the extent of the pandemic became apparent, the Prime Minister had no choice but to close schools. In PMQs, he said on March 18: “I want to pay a particular tribute not only to the NHS but also to our teachers.” Within hours, it was confirmed: schools were shut indefinitely from the end of the week for all but the children of key workers and vulnerable youngsters.
In the year since, we have seen schools opened and then shut again – and the initially small pool of children eligible to attend school due to their parents’ key work swell to include those deemed at risk and those who cannot manage home learning.
