Student Court rules SMPA, Corcoran, Trachtenberg senate seats invalid

The Student Court declared Sunday that Student Association Senate seats for the School of Media and Public Affairs, Corcoran School of the Arts and Design and Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration are invalid and scrapped them from the body. SA President Brandon Hill filed a complaint against a Joint Elections Commission advisory opinion that allowed all Columbian College of Arts and Sciences students to vote for the CCAS senate race but not for the SMPA or Corcoran races if the voter is not a member of one of those schools. After a court hearing Sunday, the court released an order stating the “reserved seats” within CCAS are “inconsistent” with the SA charter and the University’s Guide to Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Op-ed: The RSC is perpetuating climate denial

Op-eds By Victoria Freire Mar 1, 2021 12:05 AM Victoria Freire is a sophomore studying international affairs and history. For the seemingly millionth time, our nation is witnessing a catastrophic climate event before our eyes. Last month, severe winter weather left more than 2.6 million people without power in Texas. Americans are freezing to death in their homes as extreme weather, brought on by the ever-worsening climate crisis, grips the nation. It has never been more clear that we are running out of time to save our planet. In times like these, of emergency and chaos, we tend to – and should – reflect inward. Are we doing all that we can to provide aid to others and prevent the destruction of our planet? Maybe we are trying, but an issue like climate change is so existential and overwhelming that our individual actions feel futile. But the University’s actions are not futile, and officials have a huge responsibility to do their part in curbing climate change.

Student Court sets Sunday date for voting rights hearing

Updated: Feb. 23, 2021 at 3:20 p.m. The Student Court released an order Monday setting a hearing date for a case on some students’ voting rights for the upcoming Student Association Senate elections. The order states a public hearing will take place Sunday at 2 p.m. via Zoom. SA President Brandon Hill filed a complaint last week against the Joint Elections Commission – the body that oversees SA elections – seeking to extend voting rights for the School of Media and Public Affairs and Corcoran School of the Arts and Design races to all Columbian College of Arts and Sciences students. A JEC advisory opinion states CCAS students will only be allowed to vote for the SMPA or Corcoran races if they are also a member of one of those schools.
