Girl s kin admits to lesser charge | Columbia County

AUSTERLITZ â An Austerlitz family has pleaded guilty in the death of a 12-year-old girl. The girlâs parents, along with five other family members, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, in relation to the 2019 death of the child. âThis conviction is in full satisfaction of all charges,â Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka said. The family members had previously been charged with second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony. Family members had pleaded not guilty to the previous charge. Czajka announced Wednesday that Judge Richard Koweek had accepted the guilty pleas in Columbia County Court.

Columbia County agencies switch to digital public safety communications, some lose signal access

A recent upgrade to Columbia County public safety communications hardware and software included a switch from analog to more reliable digital signal and may have impacted the publicâs ability to listen in on the communications. Chief Deputy Gregory Bisch of the Columbia County Sheriffâs Office said they are âin the process of switching overâ but a few loose ends still need to be addressed with a communications tower upgrade and seeking a channel for large-scale emergency events involving multiple agencies. The biggest change is communications now flow through a digital format, which can cause a problem for anyone in the public using an analog scanner. While the new technology allows agencies to encrypt, or mask communications from public listening, Bisch said the department views public knowledge as helpful.
