Whether it was service throughout her more than 30-year career in the military or through her many community involvements, retired Lt. Col. Terry Owens always has emphasized care for others.
A newly elected member of the Radcliff City Council, Owens has been active in several community organizations since moving to the Fort Knox area in 2007.
Originally from Newport News, Virginia, Owens earned a bachelorâs degree in biology in 1987 and a masterâs degree in elementary education in 1990 from Hampton University. Also in 1987, Owens joined the U.S. Army Reserves as a combat medic in the 18th Field Hospital in Norfolk, a decision that foreshadowed a long career in military leadership.

VAN WERT – On Jan. 7, 2021, Brian Ankney was promoted to Fire Captain
and Austin Miller was promoted to Fire Lieutenant at the Van Wert Fire
Department.
Brian Ankney entered the Fire
Service in 1989 with the Paulding Volunteer Fire Department. He attained
his certification as a Volunteer in June of 1990. In March of 1998, he

Lt. Brian Ankney was promoted to the rank of captain, while Austin Miller will replace Ankney as a fire lieutenant.
Ankney firefighting career began in 1989 with the Paulding Volunteer Fire Department and he attained his certification as a volunteer firefighter in June 1990. In March 1998, he earned his Firefighter 1 certification and, three months later, in June 1998, he became a fire instructor.
Ankney earned EMT-Basic status in August 1999 and, in February 2001, was hired by the Van Wert Fire Department. In August 2001, he completed training for his paramedic certification, and, in October of that year, earned the Firefighter 2 designation. Ankney obtained his fire safety inspector certification in November 2002.
Gastonia Police Chief Travis Brittain announced four new sergeants and eight recently hired officers during a virtual promotion and swearing-in ceremony on Dec. 17.
“This ceremony is different than how we’ve done it in the past due to the pandemic, and this is a proud moment for us as we formally recognize our new officers and sergeants,” Brittain said. “We look forward to the great work they will do with our department and our community.”

Sgt. Shane Johnson, promoted on Dec. 3, joined Gastonia Police Department in 1998 and has served in patrol, and as a community coordinator, field training officer, police training officer and shift tactical officer. Johnson served the N.C. Air National Guard for 23 years.
