Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other events in the nation’s capital, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser signed the Ban on Non-Compete Agreements Amendment Act of 2020 on January 11, 2021. The bill previously passed the Council of the District of Columbia by a 12-0 vote on December 15, 2020. Congress now has 30 days to review the bill, which will become law unless Congress passes a joint resolution of disapproval, which the president must sign. Given the other events going on in Congress, it seems unlikely Congress and the incoming president will disapprove of this law before the 30-day review period ends.
The US capital has continued to boost security by shutting down access to landmarks and erecting vehicle checkpoints at a security perimeter surrounding central Washington ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on 20 January (US time).
The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday will take place under extraordinary security against threats from armed far-right groups after the Jan. 6 storming of Congress by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump.

Washington is braced for more unrest. A wide perimeter of streets around the White House are locked down in Washington, D.C., as up to 20,000 National Guard troops are in the process of deployment for President-Elect Joseph R Biden Jr.’s Jan. 20 inauguration.
Fences were installed around several federal buildings in an effort to curtail further violence, including a 7-foot unscalable fence around the Capitol building. Razor wire will be installed on top of the fencing around the Capitol building, as well.
The armed troops are responsible for security around the Capitol building.

About 16 groups, mostly Trump supporters and some claiming to be armed, have registered to protest in Washington. Police departments are on alert for more violence during the inauguration.
Separately, a Chicago-area man was arrested and charged Tuesday after allegedly lodging a direct threat aimed at the inauguration. In a Dec. 29 voice mail message left for a New Jersey House member, Louis Capriotti allegedly warned that Biden would not be allowed to walk into that (expletive) White House on Jan. 20 without a fight.
“We will surround the (expletive) White House and we will kill any (expletive) Democrat that steps on the (expletive) lawn,” he said, the federal complaint alleges.
Federal authorities have briefed lawmakers on similar threats that have been timed to the the inauguration. In a separate FBI briefing this week with local law enforcement officials, Director Christopher Wray warned of the threat to state government buildings and lawmakers.
