Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin announces he will not seek re-election Feb 4, 2021 12:29 PM EST COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– In a press conference held Thursday afternoon, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin announced that he will not seek a fourth term in office. Mayor Benjamin will serve the remainder of his term which will end on December 31 of this year. Mayor Benjamin noted that he wants to focus on building his family and growing his law practice. Benjamin was elected in 2010 and became Columbia’s first Black mayor.

As they have done for months, the city and state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was item number one on the agenda. After hearing from Emergency Management Director Harry Tinsley, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin again urged residents to get the vaccine as soon as possible. So far there have been more than 36,000 cases of COVID-19 in Richland County.

Jan. 26 The Columbia area continues to lag behind some comparable metropolitan areas in the Southeast in a number of key economic metrics, according to a new report. On Monday, EngenuitySC, a nonprofit focused on economic development, published its Midlands Regional Competitiveness Report for the sixth consecutive year. The report looks at how the Columbia metropolitan area, which includes Richland, Lexington, Saluda, Calhoun, Fairfield and Kershaw counties, compares to nine other metropolitan statistical areas across the South in a number of economic metrics.
