Ravaged by outbreaks, Colorado nursing homes await arrival of vaccine

Nursing home residents and workers will begin receiving coronavirus vaccine in two weeks, a welcome piece of positive news for facilities that continue to be battered by outbreaks and deaths. Colorado set a record for outbreaks in nursing homes and assisted living facilities on Wednesday, surpassing grim tallies set in recent weeks. According to state data, outbreaks were underway at 118 nursing homes and 137 assisted living centers. That s up from 101 and 119, respectively, a week ago, which itself was more than the 86 and 101 outbreaks announced on Dec. 2.  The outbreaks have sickened hundreds of people and led to scores of deaths. Their scale has been surpassed only by outbreaks within prisons, where spread of the disease has been rampant. The difference is that the long-term facilities are filled with older, more chronically ill patients, putting them at a particularly high risk of severe disease and death.

COVID surge heats up competition for medical workers

Shutterstock.com Health care facilities have hit the wall on medical staffing due to the growing number of COVID-19 hospitalizations. And that likely means higher operations costs. The virus has created a huge demand for not only nurses, already in short supply nationwide, but other clinical workers as well. Hospitals and clinics also need to fill slots created by absences when regular staffers test positive or have to quarantine. As the nation confronts its third surge of COVID patients — the biggest yet — hospitals, nursing homes, labs and other health care providers are squeezed for staff, despite assistance from the National Guard.
