Colorado River management may change under Biden administration

The new Biden administration could take action on the Colorado River that would go well beyond the president-elect’s term in office. The week of Dec. 14, the seven states that are part of the Colorado River Compact began the first step for renegotiating guidelines that will decide how much water the three lower basin states and Mexico will get from Lake Mead, on the Arizona-Nevada border, and from Mead’s source, the Colorado River. The guidelines are interim, signed in April 2007, and are due to expire in 2026. Among the most significant, the guidelines provide long-term stable management of the river and also determine the circumstances under which the Interior secretary could reduce the annual amount of water available from Lake Mead to the Colorado River lower basin states. The guidelines also are a way for the basin states to avoid litigation, part of what prompted the 2007 interim guidelines.

Trout Unlimited s year of COVID

The driving mission behind decades of work by Trout Unlimited is to conserve, protect and restore America’s cold-water fisheries and their watersheds. In Colorado, CTU’s efforts have focused on collaborative approaches to restore native cutthroat trout, mitigate impacts of abandoned mines, enhance access to public lands, and engage diverse communities in fishing and conservation. Founded in 1985, the Collegiate Peaks Chapter of Trout Unlimited has worked tirelessly to bring TU’s mission to life here in the Upper Arkansas Valley. Over the years, the Chapter has worked closely with national and state TU staff to improve the quality of fishing along the State’s longest stretch of Gold Medal water in the Arkansas River, as well as develop local partnerships to clean up abandoned mines, get local youth on the river, and support local veterans.

New El Paso County disaster plan identifies biggest hazards

El Paso County’s two biggest hazards are floods and wildfires, according to a new countywide disaster plan approved Tuesday. The risk for both flooding and wildfires ranked “high” in the nearly 550-page Pikes Peak Regional Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan, compiled over the last year by emergency managers with the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management and approved unanimously by El Paso County commissioners. The plan updates and consolidates the 2015 El Paso County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan and the 2016 City of Colorado Springs Hazard Mitigation Plan to include El Paso County, Colorado Springs, Calhan, Fountain, Green Mountain Falls, Manitou Springs, Monument, Palmer Lake and Ramah.
