Colorado’s bill to create an affordability board to reduce the price of prescription drugs passed the Senate with a 19-16 vote last week after contentious debate in the chamber.
The bill’s supporters including most state Democrats and state entities like the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing say the board’s establishment of upper payment limits for certain high-cost prescription drugs will make critical medications significantly more affordable for Coloradans.
Opponents including conservative state lawmakers and pharmaceutical companies have repeatedly countered these claims, saying the board would interfere with the prescription drug market and wouldn’t actually benefit consumers.
Since Colorado is largely reliant on ballot drop boxes, there are changes specifically for ballot drop boxes.
The bill would restrict future drop boxes from being located at police stations or sheriff s substations. I think that there s some concerns from some voters and various stakeholder groups, where they have a history of their communities not trusting their police, and I think that s where that concern comes from, said Matt Crane, Executive Director of the Colorado County Clerks Association.
Crane, a former Republican Arapahoe County Clerk & Recorder, pointed out that some of the most popular drop boxes are currently outside law enforcement. According to Denver Elections, Denver s most popular dropbox is the only one located at a police station, outside District Three at I-25 and University.
