North Cheyenne Canyon Road closes for most of May

The Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department is closing North Cheyenne Canyon Road during weekdays in May while construction crews work on a parking lot improvement project, a city news release said. The closure began Monday and lasts until May 28, and runs between the northern boundary of North Cheyenne Cañon Park to Helen Hunt Falls, the release said. The project aims to expand a gravel lot from 75 non-designated spots to 92 designated spaces at the intersection of North Cheyenne Canyon Road, High Drive and Gold Camp Road, the release said. Concrete curbs and gutters will also be added along with paved surfaces and accessible parking spaces.

Panorama Park is set to undergo the largest neighborhood park renovation in reported city history and will be highlighted with a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday at 12:30 p.m. City of Colorado Springs The 13.5-acre space in southeast Colorado Springs, adjacent to Panorama Middle School, had only a very small playground, baseball field, picnic shelter and an unpaved parking lot all of which has been torn down in the past two weeks.

Never seen a boulder this large come off these canyon walls, said Scott Abbott with Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. Abbotâs been caring for parks in Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. The boulder is the size of a car. It fell with no warning Sunday afternoon. The park was crowded and a lot of visitors watched it come crashing down onto the road. We got extremely lucky that there weren t cars or recreationalists in the way when this rock decided to find a new home, said Abbott.
