Locals have claimed that central reservations on roads such as Brockburn Road, Braidcraft Road and Barrhead Road have been left abandoned by the council, after grass was left uncut for multiple weeks during the height of summer. Drivers in the area have blasted the council for leaving it to grow and say that the unattended grass verges, which stand almost two feet high, have resulted in dangerous driving conditions.

Glasgow swimmer Jabez unluckiest in the world after 22 attempts to swim the Channel

1 Jabez Wolffe was the son of a Kelvinbridge watchmaker, an international celebrity more than 100 years ago - and possibly the unluckiest swimmer in the world. Born in the city in 1876, he became a champion swimmer with more than 10 marathon records to his name, but he was obsessed with becoming the second man to swim the channel (after Captain Webb in 1875). 2 A member of the Glasgow Dolphin Swimming Club, Jabez made his first attempt on July 23, 1907. Our sister newspaper the then Glasgow Herald reported: “He took water at 10.46. The sea was smooth, there was practically no wind…A Calais boat brought news that at 3pm he was seven or eight miles out and going well with his over-arm stroke. A later telegram says that Wolffe had to abandon his attempt owing to his leg giving out. He said he was resigned to his fate and would not make another attempt.” In fact, he did try again, 21 times, but he never succeeded.

Glasgow author Peter Ross says libraries are the NHS for the imagination and should not be shut

Author Peter Ross joined campaigners at the Couper Institute Glasgow Life lost £38m last year due to lockdown and its estimated income for 2020/21 is around £6.4m. An agreed council funding deal will see Glasgow Life receive a guaranteed £100m for the next four years to open 90 out of its 171 venues. Without further funding, they say they cannot reopen any more venues. It is why The Herald has launched A Fair Deal for Glasgow campaign calling on both Scottish and UK governments to agree a new funding deal for Glasgow’s culture and leisure and venues of national and international significance.
