UPDATE - Monday evening, the Orcutt Union School District Board of Trustees approved a return to in-person learning for students in grades TK-6 for all schools in the district.
ORIGINAL STORY - With a drop in the number of COVID-19 cases, Santa Barbara County is on track to re-open elementary schools.
School districts all across Santa Barbara County are preparing and waiting for the green light from the county that will allow them to make a decision. For some school districts like Orcutt Union, their board of trustees is meeting Monday night to discuss whether to open once they get the go-ahead.

The Santa Barbara Unified School District is trumpeting its readiness to re-open schools, touting its preparedness in a recent op-ed piece, and issuing press releases about the approval of its health-and-safety plan to prevent COVID-19 infections.

Larry Doris of Agilent Technologies was the SBSCC board member who led the manufacturing and technology sector group. With regards to the importance of the chamber’s industry specific process, he said, “In a fast moving industry like technology, the uncertainty of the world in both the short- and long-term was concerning. By convening business leaders, elected officials and employees by industry, we were able to identify paths that allowed each group to move forward with direction and contribute to a healthy business community and economy.”

The Goleta Union School District is looking to offer summer school classes to help students who have fallen further behind because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These are students who have the greatest needs, said Mary Kahn, assistant superintendent.
