Fish oil supplements do not raise LDL-cholesterol levels: New analysis

Fish oil supplements do not raise LDL-cholesterol levels: New analysis While the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fatty acids have been known for decades, there was disagreement about whether fish oil supplements may raise LDL-cholesterol levels. A new analysis provides reassurance about the safety of these products. Data from a predominantly male, normolipidemic, middle-aged cohort of 9,253 individuals indicated that fish oil supplementation was not associated with increases in LDL-cholesterol levels. In addition, fish oil supplementation was associated with increases in red blood cell (erythrocyte) levels of DHA. “[I]ncreases in the omega-3 index and in erythrocyte DHA over time were associated with modestly decreased levels of LDL-C,” wrote the researchers, led by Dr William Harris from the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI).

More omega-3s equate to faster heart rate recovery, study finds

More omega-3s equate to faster heart rate recovery, study finds The study was published recently in the journal Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids.  The research hailed from the Cooper Institute in Texas and from universities in Iowa, California, Texas and South Dakota. The research was structured as an observational study using data from 13,912 patients who had undergone a comprehensive examination at the Cooper Institute. The institute is a research facility founded by Dr Kenneth Cooper, whose 1968 book Aerobics helped transform how Americans saw exercise and its role in supporting health. As part of their examinations the participants underwent a maximal treadmill test as well as comprehensive blood tests.

Fish oil supplements not associated with increases in bad cholesterol

Fish oil supplements not associated with increases in bad cholesterol The Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) has published a new research paper in conjunction with The Cooper Institute on the omega-3s EPA and DHA in fish oil and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Omega-3 fatty acids have a long history of being heart healthy, and are well-known for lowering blood levels of triglycerides (but typically not cholesterol). Recent questions have been raised, however, about one of the two fish oil omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and the possibility that it might actually raise levels of LDL-C, the bad cholesterol.

Fish oil study has good news for those worried about cholesterol

Fish oil study has good news for those worried about cholesterol Omega-3 fatty acid supplements often sold as fish oil capsules are popular due to research indicating beneficial effects on brain and heart health. Some past research has raised questions over whether these supplements raise ‘bad’ cholesterol levels, however, something the new study addresses. The study comes from the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI), which notes that there’s evidence high doses of omega-3s can increase ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in people who have very high triglyceride levels. However, it has been unclear whether the average generally healthy person faces the same risk.
