COLOMBO (News 1st): The adjournment debate on the ‘current situation in the country,’ which commenced on Tuesday (May 04) will continue on Wednesday (05) from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, Secretary-General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake said.
The Committee on Parliamentary Business chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on Tuesday (May 04) decided NOT to hold the debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill today (05).
The debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill will NOT be held today, as the Speaker is yet to receive the determination of the Supreme Court with regard to the petitions filed challenging the bill, Dhammika Dasanayake further noted.

COLOMBO (News1st): The Parliamentary debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill which was scheduled to be held tomorrow was postponed today.
The postponement was announced as the Speaker is yet to receive the Supreme Court’s determination on the Port City Economic Commission Bill.
“Everything required to be approved or passed will be done under our Government in the future,” Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando said.
He added that government lawmakers are eager to debate the Port City bill in Parliament.
“An agreement was reached to hold the debate on two days next week,” Gayantha Karunathilaka, an opposition lawmaker noted.

All party leaders in the House agreed that the debate should be rescheduled as the Supreme Court s determination on the constitutionality of the bill had not yet reached Parliament, officials said.
The USD 1.4-billion Colombo Port City project, expected to play a key role in China s ambitious Maritime Silk Road project in India s backyard, is said to be the single largest private sector development in the island.
China has built the port city on reclaimed sea, adjoining the Port of Colombo.
