Mexican American hero of WWI up for Texas highest military honor Suzanne Gamboa © Provided by NBC News Deprived for years of full recognition for his bravery in World War I, Marcelino Serna, a former Army private, was chosen by a Texas legislative committee on Friday to be posthumously awarded the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor. Serna, a Mexican immigrant, is often considered Texas most decorated WWI veteran. He is credited with singlehandedly charging and capturing 24 soldiers, but further research has found other acts of bravery. His wartime acts have re-emerged as Latino advocates and lawmakers wage a campaign for him to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, which the groups say he has been denied for decades because of racism and xenophobia.

Aside from confusion concerning the time for the funeral service, the family says delays prevented Muñoz from receiving a burial with military honors.

Ft. Bliss National Cemetery Wreath Laying Ceremony to be Streamed Wreaths Across America will stream the wreath laying ceremony at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on Friday, December 18.  While the pandemic has limited the number of volunteers that will place these wreaths on at the cemetery, it is still comforting to know that this solemn tradition will still be happening in some capacity. The ceremony will begin streaming at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 18 and can be accessed at facebook.com/wreathsinelpaso. This will be the 28 th year that Wreaths Across America is able to honor those who have served and are no longer with us.  Considering El Paso’s long military ties to Fort Bliss, the ceremony in particular holds a sacred place in the hearts of many here in town.
