Roughly 10 per cent of local businesses have closed because of COVID-19, April’s floods and the economic downturn, said Dianna de Sousa, executive director of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce.
The impact the three events had on local businesses has been different, but de Sousa feels the flood caused more closures. This is because struggling businesses have been able to apply for COVID-19 relief and subsidies from different levels of government. But for the flood, there were few supports available and plenty of fights with insurance.
