Ocean City-Wright firefighters mourn retired captain killed in crash

“At that point they weren’t totally sure of his condition and that’s how we found out,” said Ocean City-Wright Deputy Chief Jeff Wagner. “Those guys were great. They stood on scene and just kind of honored him, guarding his body until we could get down there.”  The Ocean City-Wright firefighters got to the scene, sat down and told old stories about their time with Powell while waiting for the coroner to arrive and take him to Pensacola for an autopsy.  You re family up here Powell was 56 years old and had been retired from the department for about four years, after dedicating almost 30 years of his life to the profession. Not too many of his colleagues still work at the department, but those who do remember him well.

FWC encourages safe boating during Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival Posted on The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is reminding all boaters to practice safe boating during the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival on May 1 in Fort Walton Beach. The FWC and law enforcement partners, including the United States Coast Guard, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Okaloosa Island Fire Department, Fort Walton Beach Police Department, Fort Walton Beach Fire Department and several others, will be patrolling the waterways for public safety during the event. Law enforcement agencies are encouraging all boaters to enjoy their time on the water but to take a few safety precautions to stay safe. This includes designating a sober boat operator, wearing a life jacket, using an engine cut-off switch lanyard, and paying attention and keeping a proper lookout.

Fort Walton Beach Fire Department launches podcast to help inform public

FORT WALTON BEACH A firefighter s job often entails more than just fighting fires, but what goes on behind the scenes isn t always apparent.  The Fort Walton Beach Fire Department hopes to change that with a new platform for communicating with the public. People can tune in to the Fire Department’s new podcast every two weeks to discover more about its inner workings. The Fort Walton Beach Fire Brief podcast also covers current events and frequently asked questions, among other things. The podcast launched a few weeks ago as a part of a collaborative effort between Fire Chief Ken Perkins and Battalion Chief David “DJ” Stone.
