Founders legacy inspires students

Hays Daily News The show wasn t scheduled to happen, but after a cancellation opened up the calendar, the question became what to call it. Moss-Thorns Art Gallery director Colin Schmidtberger and graphic design student Morgan Choitz came up with Cartulary. Broadly, it s the idea of holding things from the past, Schmidtberger explained on Thursday at the gallery on the Fort Hays State University campus. Cartulary, which opened Jan. 25, is a show of original works by two revered former department heads of the Fort Hays State University Art Department, Joel Moss and John Thorns. Moss-Thorns Gallery is the actual name of our gallery, that is the foundation,  said Schmidtberger, also an interior design instructor. Cartulary was a unique name to entice people to come in to our exhibition, but it also sticks with Moss-Thorns works, as those are our founders.

UK variant brings KDHE mobile lab to campus Friday

Hays Daily News “This isn’t the really bad one,” said Spc. James Hawkins, a medic with the Kansas National Guard. “Just midway up your nose to get a couple boogers.” Those were the instructions for Kadin Heacock, a Fort Hays State University senior majoring in cybersecurity and a member of the wrestling team. Heacock showed up first thing Saturday morning for COVID-19 testing at FHSU’s Gross Memorial Coliseum. About 196 students, faculty and staff were tested Friday by a rapid response team of health care workers organized by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. They came equipped with KDHE’s brand new lab on wheels, which can run the test samples on site.
