PECOS, Texas – Maria Baeza Valeriano opened her front door to the view of a closed-down hotel and an oil workers’ camp, where migrant boys played soccer behind a shaded chain-link fence. “I feel so bad for them, for being all alone,” said Baeza Valeriano, who, in her 80s, is a mother of five, grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of eight. “It’s a lot, that the parents let their children go. I wouldn’t let go of my children for anything.”

Erie County deaths: Coroner seeks relatives of man who died at hotel

The Erie County Coroner s Office is attempting to locate relatives of a man staying in Erie who died at a hotel in the city on Wednesday. Mark L. Willey, 58, who was from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, but had been staying in Erie, died at the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, Coroner Lyell Cook said. Willey died of natural causes, he said. Willey is believed to have relatives living in the Erie area, Cook said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Erie County Coroner s Office at 814-452-2911.

$200K in Polk County resiliency grants recommended by committee

$200K in Polk County resiliency grants recommended by committee Crookston Times     The Polk County Business Resiliency Grant Program committee for Crookston met Tuesday and approved $200,000 in grants for 39 of 41 applications from local businesses and nonprofits. Applications from DaRoos Pizza, which was previously operating in downtown Crookston, and Resource Management, which operates apartments near the Downtown Square, were denied.     They also looked over 18 grant applications from outside of Crookston and made recommendations for the $100,000 available which will be decided at a later meeting with city and county leaders.     The committee consisted of Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) board members Kurt Heldstab, Craig Buness and Leon Kremeier, City Council members Tom Vedbraaten and Wayne Melbye, plus CHEDA Executive Director Craig Hoiseth and City Administrator Amy Finch acting as liaisons.

City of Superior receives $250,000 state grant to support construction of new downtown hotel

WEDC investment to help fund development of 60-room Cobblestone Hotel & Suites MADISON, WI. JAN. 25, 2021 – The City of Superior is receiving a $250,000 state grant to assist in the construction of a 60-unit Cobblestone Hotel & Suites in downtown Superior. The Community Development Investment Grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) will support the partnership between the City of Superior and Superior Hotel Group, LLC bring a 36,800 square-foot, four-story, upper-midscale Cobblestone Hotel & Suites branded hotel to the downtown. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. “A vibrant downtown is vital to a community’s overall economic success, and the new Cobblestone Hotel & Suites will play a key role in bringing more visitors to downtown Superior to enjoy the many amenities the city has to offer,” said
