Last Friday Comal Countyâs active COVID case count was approaching the 300 mark. This week itâs approaching the 400 mark.
Thatâs part of an upward trend in cases being seen not only in Comal County, but across much of the rest of the country as the more easily-spread delta variant of the COVID-19 virus has become the dominant strain.
Nationally, the majority of new cases are being found in unvaccinated individuals â with the CDC saying that more than 99% of COVID deaths over the last month were people who hadnât been vaccinated.
While Comal County says it has been tracking the vaccination status of those hospitalized and dying from COVID, it hasnât released that information publicly. The Herald-Zeitung this week formally requested the data from county officials.
Comal Countyâs number of active COVID-19 cases remained in the 200s this week but continued to inch up toward the 300 mark.
Over the last week, Comal County added an additional 167 COVID-19 cases to its total, as well as 103 recoveries from the disease.Â
On Friday, the countyâs active case total stood at 295, with 12 people hospitalized â up from five hospitalized on Friday last week.
Hospitals in the county reported caring for 17 COVID-19 patients on Friday, with seven of those in intensive care and three on ventilators. Thatâs up from the 15 reported last Friday.
County officials have reported 11,550 cases of the virus since the pandemic began in March 2020 and climbed above 300 cases again briefly in May of 2021.
Comal County health officials added 90 COVID-19 cases to the countyâs total from the four-day Fourth of July holiday period and reported an additional fatality on Wednesday.
The countyâs death toll rose to 328 as health officials confirmed the death of a New Braunfels man in his 80s on July 2.
The new cases, of which 51 are confirmed cases and 39 are probable, bring the countyâs active number of cases to 272, increasing 23 from Tuesdayâs report.
The number of active cases has crept upwards in recent weeks. The countyâs active cases figures were 210 on June 23 and 189 on June 1.
The county has reported 11,499 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020.
Comal Countyâs COVID-19 death toll rose to 327 on Tuesday as health officials confirmed the death of a New Braunfels man in his 50s on June 26.
County health officials also added 26 cases since its Friday report as well as nine recoveries, bringing the total number of cases to 249, an increase of 16.
Fifteen of the new cases are confirmed, while 11 are probable.
Of the active cases, five people are hospitalized, unchanged from Friday.
Comal County hospitals reported caring for 17 COVID-19 patients, with four are in intensive care and two on ventilators. Thatâs an increase of two patients from Friday.
Officials have said that number could include both county and non-county residents hospitalized.
