A plan to resume jury duty in May and begin in-person trials in June is among several items of interest up for discussion Tuesday morning by Bexar County commissioners.
Under the plan to attempt to safely revive trial proceedings, potential jurors would fill out information online and be assigned to a court to keep them from spending all day waiting at the courthouse to see if they are picked for a jury. District Judge Ron Rangel, administrative judge over local district courts, will brief commissioners on the plan developed in consultation with Dr. Ruth Berggren of University Health.
Comal Independent School District has a bone to pick with state legislators, who havenât released COVID-19 funds approved over a month ago.
Three federal stimulus packages passed during the pandemic included more than $19 billion for Texas public schools, but state leaders have yet to distribute most of the money. Local districts say they need it to cover pandemic-related costs.
A recent non-profit study said Comal ISD is awaiting $23.2 million and New Braunfels ISD $14.7 million in the two remaining rounds of federal COVID-19 stimulus money now awaiting a decision by legislative education committees. The Texas Legislature is holding back the money that s supposed to go to school districts â and thatâs not right,â Comal ISD Board President David Drastata said Monday.

Hello parents, teachers and students! How are you all doing during this last grind before summer break? I know we’re all ready for some rest and relaxation as we start to see the weather begin to warm up.
There was some big educational news this week as the school board for San Antonio’s second-largest school district announced that they were easing some of its COVID-19 protocols that have been in place during the school year. The North East Independent School District will now allow students to remove masks during recess and outdoor physical education classes, all while allowing parent meetings and parent-teacher conferences to be done in person.
Olivia Weisinger, never a particularly political person, found herself outside the Comal Independent School District board meeting in New Braunfels late last month, rallying parents, students and teachers to voice their anger over the school board’s decision to eliminate the district’s mask mandate.
“I’ve never done any of this,” Weisinger said in a quiet voice with a tired edge.

Before the pandemic, her eldest was happily enrolled in a Comal ISD elementary school, with three younger siblings in line behind him. Now, after a long year at odds with the district over its handling of COVID-19 policies for its 25,000 students, she’s home-schooling her son while filing grievances with the Texas Education Agency, organizing protests and making videos challenging board members’ statements.
