The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has urged deactivated voters to reactivate their voting status for them to be able to participate in the general elections in May 2022.
In her official Twitter account, Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said that more than half a million deactivated voters have applied for reactivation so far.
“Only 600,000 of the 7.3 million voters deactivated for failure to vote twice have registered again,” said Guanzon.
The Comelec official expressed hopes that more deactivated voters will reactivate their status.
“Please encourage them to register this month. Avoid the rush,” she said.
Based on Voter’s Registration Act of 1996, a registration may be deactivated if a person “did not vote in the two successive preceding regular elections as shown by their voting records.”

In an online town hall forum on Thursday, July 8, Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon cited the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic as one reason for this.
“This will be an election like no other because we are facing a pandemic,” said Guanzon.
“The method of campaign will have to change. There will be a lot of reliance on social media campaign platforms,” she added.
Guanzon said it will also be an election like no other because the country will be electing a president.
“It’s going to be a hotly contested election because in the last election, the country, the voters, the people were polarized…the method of campaign even through FB or Twitter was fierce,” she said.

Citing the data culled from its Election Records and Statistics Department (ERSD), the Comelec said on Monday, Feb. 15, a total of 1,339,346 applications for voter registration have been processed nationwide, as of Feb. 4.
Last month, Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said they are behind their four million target of new registrants.
Due to this, the poll body extended the voter registration hours starting this week to “help bolster voter registration turnout.”
The Comelec said all Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs) nationwide will be open to receive applications for voter registration from Tuesdays to Saturdays, including holidays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
