He is the 17th person to have been killed in the attack of wild elephants in Coimbatore Forest Division this year. A 63-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Coimbatore district late on Wednesday.
The Forest Department has identified the deceased as M. Somasundaram from Mariamman temple road at Chinna Thadagam.

The Forest Department has placed a cage to trap a leopard that has been frequenting villages near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district.
The trap was placed near Chennamalai Karadu, a hillock inhabited by small animals and surrounded by villages within the limits of the Sirumugai forest range, on Wednesday evening.
D. Venkatesh, District Forest Officer of Coimbatore Forest Division, gave the nod to place the trap after people complained to the Forest Department that a leopard had been frequenting their villages.

An elephant nicknamed ‘Shankar’ that killed a man and his son near Gudalur in the Nilgiris on Sunday was included in the category of ‘brash’ elephants in a profiling of the large mammals done by the Forest Department and Shola Trust in the region in 2016.
Brash elephants were one of the four categories of elephants identified in the profiling exercise in which 150 elephants were photographed and profiles for 90 individuals were created in three years from 2015.
